Launch of the First Large Vessel Designed and Built Under Canada’s National Shipbuilding Strategy

Seaspan Shipyards today celebrated the launch of the first large vessel to be designed and built under the Government of Canada’s National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS) – CCGS Sir John Franklin, the first of three Offshore Fisheries Science Vessels (OFSV) December 8th. In 2011, the Government of Canada competitively selected Seaspan to be its Non-Combat Shipbuilder as part of the NSS program. Minister of Jobs, Trade and Technology Bruce Ralston joined about 3,000 people today, as Seaspan Shipyards opened its North Vancouver facility to the public for the first time, for a glimpse of the first large Canadian Coast Guard ship built in Canada since the early 1980s.
