“If we don’t spend more together now to prevent war, we will pay a much, much, much higher price later to fight it” - NATO Secretary General, Mr Mark Rutte

In his first major speech as NATO Secretary General, Mark Rutte highlighted the critical need to ramp up defense spending and defense production in an increasingly turbulent security environment. Speaking at an event hosted by Carnegie Europe in Brussels on Thursday (12 December 2024), Rutte called on Allies to “shift to a wartime mindset and turbo charge our defense production and defense spending.”

Rutte’s speech was followed by a conversation moderated by Dr Rosa Balfour, Director of Carnegie Europe.
