Canada’s monitoring and surveillance activities against illicit maritime activities, including ship-to-ship transfers with North Korean-flagged vessels
From mid- to late February, the Canadian Navy frigate Ottawa conducted surveillance activities by a naval vessel for the 12th time since 2018 in the waters surrounding Japan, against illegal maritime activities including ship-to-ship transfers with North Korean-flagged vessels prohibited by United Nations Security Council resolutions.
Japan welcomes these efforts, with the view that the international community will remain united in working to ensure the effectiveness of UN Security Council resolutions in order to realize North Korea’s dismantlement of all weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missiles of all ranges in a complete, verifiable and irreversible manner.
As for the Ministry of Defense and the Self-Defense Forces, the Maritime Self-Defense Force is collecting information on vessels suspected of violating UN Security Council resolutions, and will continue to cooperate closely with relevant countries and international organizations, including Canada.
