On Tuesday, May 17, 2022 between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., there was the rare opportunity to look over the shoulder of the DEU MARFOR (“German Maritime Forces Staff”) in its situation center to take a closer look at their mission and tasks. In this context, both the Admiralty and the functional staff answer questions.
The exercise “Griffin Marker 2022” with 200 participants from 14 nations is coming to an end in the future command center of the Navy. As part of “Griffin Marker 2022”, DEU MARFOR is passing an important milestone on the way to certification as a maritime headquarters by NATO.
In the future, DEU MARFOR will be able to conduct maritime operations of the alliance with a multinational staff and to have a comprehensive situation picture at all times. Its personnel plan, support and conduct multinational maritime maneuvers and operations. In times of crisis, for example, NATO or the EU can activate the staff as a maritime headquarters to command multinational naval formations. All these tasks can be carried out in whole or in part in a fixed infrastructure on land, or on board German or allied warships.
In the “Griffin Marker 2022” exercise, a conflict in the Baltic Sea region is simulated in a fictional scenario based on a realistically conceivable event, which has to be resolved in a two-and-a-half-week exercise. In addition to NATO partners, representatives from Sweden and Finland are also taking part in the exercise, as has often been the case in the past.
In reality, the geographical location of individual Baltic Sea countries is of decisive importance. In addition to Poland and the Scandinavian nations, the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are also in the special security policy area of interest of Germany and NATO. The Russia-Ukraine conflict is representative of the danger, but also of the complexity, that arises from such aggression. The protection of the alliance partners is the top priority of Germany and NATO. Especially against this background, the integration of all those involved in the “Griffin Marker 2022” exercise is necessary in order to be able to act and act decisively with our partners within the framework of national and alliance defense.
