Canada’s first of eight Arctic Ocean Patrol Ships (AOPS), HMCS Harry DeWolf, will berth at the North Vancouver site where the RCMP patrol ship St Roch was built October 1-3, 2021.
St Roch was the first ship to circumnavigate North America and is now on display at the Vancouver Maritime Museum.
Irving Shipbuilding of Halifax is building eight of these Norwegian-designed ships, six for the Royal Canadian Navy and two for the Canadian Coast Guard.
At last report, two of the ships, HMCS Max Bernays and HMCS Robert Hampton Gray, will be based in Esquimalt. The other naval variants will be based at a specially constructed berth in Halifax. Basing plans and names for the Coast Guard variants have yet to be announced.
