Canada’s monitoring and surveillance activities against illicit maritime activities, including ship-to-ship transfers with North Korean-flagged vessels
- From early May to early June, Canada will conduct its 11th aerial surveillance activity since 2018, using Kadena Air Base of the U.S. military in Japan, in accordance with the United Nations Status of Forces Agreement, to counter illegal maritime activities, including ship-to-ship transfers with North Korean-flagged vessels, which are prohibited by United Nations Security Council resolutions.
- Japan welcomes these efforts, with the view that the international community will remain united in working to ensure the effectiveness of UN Security Council resolutions toward the realization of North Korea’s dismantlement of all weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missiles of all ranges in a complete, verifiable and irreversible manner.
- As for the Ministry of Defense and the Self-Defense Forces, the Maritime Self-Defense Force is collecting information on vessels suspected of violating UN Security Council resolutions, and will continue to cooperate closely with relevant countries and international organizations.
