I am writing this afternoon with some very sad news regarding the Navy League of Canada’s Honorary Chairperson, Hugh Segal OC OOnt CD passed away last night at the age of 72.

He was appointed an Honorary Captain for the Royal Canadian Navy in 2004, and subsequently served as a Senator from 2005 – 2014. From July 2014 until June 2019, he served as the Principal of Massey College in Toronto. Mr. Segal was appointed as the Navy League of Canada’s Honorary Chair in 2014.

Mr. Segal’s dedication, passion, and contributions have touched the lives of countless individuals. His love of country, community and academic work have not only shaped Canadian politicians, students and every day Canadians, but have also inspired those around him to strive for excellence and make a positive difference in the world.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Mr. Segal will be remembered for his sense of service and duty, as well as his sense of humor that endeared him to friends, colleagues, and acquaintances alike. He had a remarkable ability to bring people together for a common purpose, making him a cherished figure in the hearts of many.

The Navy League of Canada is grateful for his service to Canada’s youth and the promotion of Canada’s maritime heritage.

Segal leaves behind his spouse, Donna and a daughter, Jacqueline to grieve his loss.

The Navy League of Canada does not have any details on funeral arrangements at this time, but will share when further information is available.
